Playing Catch-Up

Good gravy but it's been awhile since I've written!  I know you have all been waiting with baited breath... *sarcasm alert*.

Jobs: As of May 1st, we have no income to speak of.  Karl's job contract ran out at the end of April, and they did not have the budget to extend it again.

We do have a few things going for us though until we get a dependable income again:
1) we have an emergency fund to last us a few months.
2) Karl has a side business of fixing computers, (though it's not near to what we need for it to sustain us) - we're looking into setting up contracts with local businesses  - more on that in another entry.
3) I'm in the process of looking to drum up some video productions
4) We're VERY frugal.  We've been living below our means since being married.  We've never had much income to speak of even when both employed, so we're not tightening our belts and saying goodbye to "frivolous" things such as cable TV and cel phone data service, because we've never even had them to begin with.  We have always had a "bare bones" budget, so we'll be making that emergency fund stretch with very few life adjustments.  :)

Vacation: One week after hubby's official leave from his job, we went on a week's vacation to Myrtle Beach with his family.  We'd all been planning this since December, and it was just what we needed.  Here's a few pix I took at Brookgreen Gardens, a former rice plantation with acres of beautiful statues and gardens that we haunted while in SC:

Also while in Myrtle Beach, I drove a scooter for the first time in my life!  It felt so weird to be allowed on the roads with it, being a car-driver all my life.  My sister-in-law went with me on another scooter, which helped me feel less vulnerable out there.  Was a lot of fun! I also kind of…accidentally…crashed it too, lol. (tho I didn’t get hurt, and I crashed when I’d gotten back into a quiet neighborhood). Mixed up the brake and speed levers when someone darted in front of me and I panicked… >.<  Oh, and I petted a stingray that same week too! Fun week altogether!

Car news:  After 3 months of having Karl's car in his father's garage and nothing seeming to work, we (finally) took it to a mechanic who fixed it during the week we were away for vacation.  Turns out the whole bottom engine block needed replacing because of a bad cylinder.  Expensive, but still cheaper than buying another car.  So when we got back from vacay, we got Karl's car back, and it's running good as new!

Movie news: Last winter I worked on the sci-fi film, Infinite, and this past week the trailer came out!

Many of the same production people and crew that worked on Guests of a Nation (read more about Guests here and here) were also on this film, as well as some notable names in the biz, such as visual effects artist, Gregory Kochan (The Lovely Bones, Blue Valentine, Bereavement), and set designer Gillian Speers, who works set design on the TV show Saturday Night Live.  Mark Kochanowicz is Adam Fossy, and Peter Phillips plays F-Man.

Film Synopsis: Major Adam Fossy wakes from his frozen stasis aboard a ship in space, and is faced with the fact that his mission to start things over on a new earth has failed.

You can go to Infinite's website here for more info, and/or you can view the trailer for Infinite below:

Support Our Troops: This past weekend we went to a parade that my sister-in-law's hubby, Ben, took part in.  He and his company of men and women served last year in Afghanistan, and we were proud to see them marching down the street.

Sick Leave: Since this past Tues, Karl has been sick with a stomach virus and fever.  The poor guy doesn't get a break.

So that's this month so far in a nutshell.  I'm really looking forward to this coming Memorial Day weekend (hoping Karl recovers in time).  Saturday I'm planning to do some yardsale hopping.  Sunday we are attending the wedding of a dear girl that I've known since she was born and is like a cousin to me.  Monday we picnic with my family and possibly get some information about buying a plot of land.

On another note, can you believe it's already almost June?!

What I'm Digging

It's a new month, and with it, some new things that I'm currently digging:

The genius that is Julian Smith with "Buffering"

I've been following the guy on Youtube for awhile, but just had to share his newest video.  His videos don't disappoint, yo.  He even destroyed a macbook for this MV.  (p.s. - I still get his "Randy" song stuck in my head at random times).

The Honey Trees "To Be With You"

I'm a tad late with this song, but I don't care.  I like it.  (Did you catch the Harry Potter reference in the video?)

Red Apple Lipstick - Gluten-free!

Right now Red Apple Lipstick offers the "lipstick exchange", in which you send them your used, hated lipsticks you're stuck with, and they'll reduce the price of the GF lipstick tubes you order to a nice $10!

I'm planning on ordering from them this month, soon as I can dig up some unwanted lipsticks from my mom or friends (I threw mine out years ago after being diagnosed with Celiacs).  You can count on there being a review when I get them!!  ^_^

Rabito!
I am geeking out over this lil gem.  You're going to find this out sooner or later, so here it is: I love anime and manga.  This past winter, manga artist Tite Kubo made this color art of my favorite fictional gal/kindred spirit, Rukia (from Bleach).  Note her phone.

Then I was browsing The Little Dust Princess' fashion blog today, and what do my eyes see?!

(photo from The Little Princess fashion blog)

My reaction: "You mean they really do exist?!"

Mind = blown.  They're called the "Rabito case", and now I'm looking around at the different colors you can get them in while giggling to myself.  My husband just shakes his head at me - he's used to me by now.

Shinhwa "Venus"

Starting to see a theme?  I've been a Kpop fan since finding it 3 years ago via Simon & Martina when I was randomly exploring S. Korean culture and teaching English there.  I had not known of Shinhwa (and have since rectified that by finding a bunch more of their songs) until they relaunched this past March, and their new single seems to be getting the attention they wanted for their comeback, as it is very catchy. (which balances out the MV's cheesiness.  But I do like the sets and choreography).
